What Detractors Aren’t Considering About Bryce Young’s Heisman Speech
I found tonight (after Google searching) that Sunday afternoon, Alabama Crimson Tide sophomore quarterback Bryce Young won the Heisman trophy — rightfully so, in my opinion. I was aware that the presentation was Sunday, but I have been really busy, so I didn’t think to check who won until later that night, but I digress. He is the second of back-to-back Heisman winners — former Crimson Tide Devonta Smith won it last year — and he became the fourth Crimson Tide to win it since 2009.
I came across an article where some fans were feeling a certain way of about something Bryce Young said in his acceptance speech. He said: “I’ve always been ruled out and kind of doubted. For me, it’s always been about not really proving them wrong but proving to myself what I can accomplish.” I can attest to being ruled out and doubted; the second part reminds me of something similar to what Hall-of-Famer Curtis Martin said.
This ruffled the feathers of some fans and they took to Twitter to post goofy memes and (possibly) forgone conclusions. Well, not quite all of them. One fan’s tweet alludes to what I’m talking about in this post. He said something along the lines of maybe in his younger life he was doubted, but not in California, where he was heralded. I’ll get back to that in a minute.
The reason some fans are grimacing about Bryce’s comments is that he was a 5-star recruit coming out of high school in California, ranked №1 in his position, so they’re confused as to how he has been “ruled out and kind of doubted” in any way.
This leads me to the title of this topic, and what that fan alluded to that I mentioned previously. What I don’t think these disgruntled fans are considering that is maybe he was referring to his younger life. Think about it: this dude is listed at 6–0, 194, that’s extremely small for a quarterback, and it’s very easy overlook someone of that stature playing that position, especially when the ideal quarterback is about 6–4, 230, so I can image the doubt that he received and being overlooked prior to his success (so far) in recent years.
I’m not a fan of Alabama, but I do like Bryce’s game. I said when I watched him decimate the Miami Hurricanes in Week 1and ever since that he plays like a veteran out there, so although his small stature can be concerning, I can honestly say I never doubted him or ruled him out. I wish the Jets could trade Zach Wilson in exchange for him.
Maybe he was talking about earlier in his life prior to high school in California. I think is something some people should’ve at least considered before getting in their feelings. Either way, he has proven his doubters wrong, so far, and to say that this young man’s future is bright is a serious understatement.
